Getting Started With Windows 8

Getting Started With Windows 8

The latest incarnation of Windows is a much anticipated, and very different, version. And now that Windows 8 is finally here, users accustomed to previous adaptations might find this new Windows more than a little confusing.

Not only is the Start menu – that anchor of all things Windows – gone, but there’s an entirely new interface to contend with. No need to feel completely lost, though. Here’s a quick start guide for getting the most out of Microsoft’s latest offering:

The Lock Screen

Again, Windows 8 has done away with the old in preparation for the coming of the touch screen PC revolution. This begins with the lock screen, which has a completely new look. To access your login screen from a computer, tab the keyboard’s space bar or spin the mouse wheel. Of course, if you’re on a touch screen tablet, you can simply swipe upwards to get to your login. From here, enter your password to begin.

Navigation

For those using a tablet, navigating the new Windows 8 interface will be pretty basic. Simply use your finger to swipe left or right, and then tap on tile squares. For those on a desktop, however, this type of system might seem alien at first in relation to their computer. But once you get past the “newness” of the idea, it’s fairly simple.

Using your mouse wheel, scroll forward and back through your start screen. When you reach your desired tile, click on it. Alternatively, you can use the Home, End and Enter keys on your keyboard.

Accessing the Quick Menu

With the Start menu gone, it’s good to know that there’s still an easy-access menu to get to essential features like the Control Panel, Device Manager, Search Dialog and much more. To access this quick menu, hold down the Windows key while pressing X.

Keep in mind that while this quick access menu can be really helpful, it will not get you to your apps. If you’re looking for your applications instead, use the Windows key + Q.

Shutting Down

Some basic elements of Windows still remain with the new version. For example, Ctrl + Alt + Del will bring up the task manager and restart/shut down menu. Otherwise, you can move your mouse cursor towards the right bottom corner of your home screen. From there, you can click on the Settings icon and choose Restart or Shut Down from the Power menu that pops up.
