Adding Punch to Your PowerPoint Presentations With YouTube Videos and Live Webpages

YouTube can be an excellent source of material to illustrate presentations with. You don't need to move outside of a PowerPoint presentation to build your case with a well-placed YouTube video, though. You can easily embed one inside your presentation. Here's how you do this in PowerPoint 2013.

  • Click on the Insert tab in PowerPoint.

  • You will find the option to add an online video to your project under the Video button - one of the last objects on the Ribbon, under the Insert tab.

  • PowerPoint gives you several online destinations to pick online videos from - Bing Video, Facebook and YouTube, among others. The first time that you pick an online source to add videos from, you need to select it from theAlso insert from section at the bottom of the screen. This should add the online video destination to theInsert Video screen.

  • Once you have an online video source on theInsert video screen, you should be able to search for videos on that website right from within PowerPoint, through the search box right on the screen. When a result shows up, you simply need to select it and hitInsert.

Adding live webpages to PowerPoint presentations

A shot of a webpage can be useful way to illustrate a PowerPoint presentation. When it's a website that is frequently updated, though, a static screenshot may not offer the kind of effect you need. A live webpage - one that connects to the Internet for a fully functional webpage experience - may be your only option.

PowerPoint doesn't come with the ability to embed live web pictures inbuilt. The ability is easily gained, though, with an add-in called LiveWeb. To install the add-in in PowerPoint, you need to go to the LiveWeb website and get the right download for your version of PowerPoint.

Once downloaded, you need to extract the software to a location on your hard drive. To get PowerPoint to recognize it, you need to head over to PowerPoint, click onFile, Options and Add-Ins. On the Manage drop-down menu, you need to selectPowerPoint Add-Ins and click on Go. When you get the Add-Ins window, you need to clickAdd New and browse to wherever you placed the extracted software. At this point, you will get a pop-up security notice that asks you if you would like to enable macros. Clicking onEnable, you should see the LiveWeb item on your add-ins dialog box. You need to place a check in the checkbox and close the dialog.

Using LiveWeb to embed a live webpage in a PowerPoint presentation is easy. You should find aWeb Page item at the end of the Ribbon under the Insert tab. Clicking on it, you'll get a wizard that allows you add any webpage you want. If you need to have the page you select refresh each time it is loaded, you need to check on theYes, refresh webpage automatically (real-time update) box.  Once you actually start your slideshow, the live webpage that you have selected should begin to show.
