5 Ways to Make Space on Your Android Phone

If you're running low on internal space on your Android phone, don't fret. Lack of space is quite frustrating as some apps require a minimum amount of free space to run without lagging or crashing. For example, HTC's own launcher, Sense, crashes after you drop below 100 free megabytes of space. Crashing is especially annoying if you have less than one gigabyte of space to begin with, which is often a problem with HTC phones. While you can't expand the internal memory, you can take some steps to clear up space, enabling you to download more apps or enjoy your Android smartphone without issue.

Move Apps to Memory Card

Moving apps to your memory card is one of the easiest ways to free up space. You can do so from

“Settings > Applications”. The process is tedious if you have a lot of apps, so you can install a third-party app to help you. App2SD is one option, which offers a free version. It'll show all the apps that you can move and take you to the settings screen with just a click. Remember that apps with widgets should stay on your phone, and not every app is movable. Conveniently, you can lock those apps to your phone with App2SD.

Delete Texts (SMSes) and Emails

For some reason, tiny text messages take up significantly more space than you'd think on the Android operating system. You may have hundreds or thousands of messages on your phone, if you're chatty. Deleting unneeded messages is one of the most straight-forward ways to clear space, and you can do it in batch mode to speed up the process. Your messaging app may even allow you to schedule deletions.

Emails don't seem to take up as much space as text messages, but you can make some room by deleting old emails. Don't forget to clear any trash or sent folders, which you might not look at frequently but can still needlessly use precious space on your phone.

Check Your Trash Cans

Just like files wind up in your recycling bin on your PC, voicemails on your Android phone go to the trash after you delete them. Tap to launch your voicemail app and navigate to the trash can. Here, you can delete the discarded voicemail messages that may have piled up.

Clear Your Cache

Another feature of App2SD is the ability to clear the cache. It'll often pop up when you launch the program. If it doesn't, pressing the menu button will bring up the option to clear your cache. App2SD tells you exactly how much space your cache uses, how much is available on your card and phone.

Many apps allow you to clear the cache from directly within the app itself. You can manually clear the cache in Opera, set a cache size limit in Android's default browser and instruct Dolphin to clear the cache every time you exit the browser.

Take advantage of every tool that will facilitate the process and further reduce your stress.
