Changing Your Keyboard Language Setting

You can change the input language of your keyboard on virtually every operating system out there, but the procedure can be a little hard to figure out. You can change the language you use to type things in to the computer and the visual interface language, of course, but we'll be talking specifically about the input language today.

Add or Remove Keyboard Input Language
_________________________________________________________________________

All of the settings you need to change your keyboard's input language are located in the Region and Language window. To find it, do one of the following:

  • Open the Control Panel, click over to Clock, Language and Region, click on Region and Language, click on Keyboards and Languages OR click on Change keyboards and other input methods
  • Search for "change keyboard" using the search option in the Start Menu, click on Change keyboards and other input methods

Once you've located the option, you're ready to add or remove a keyboard input language.

  1. From the Region and Language window, click on Change keyboards
  2. Find the General tab in the Text Services and Input Languages window
  3. Check the list of installed languages for your keyboard
  4. To add a language, click on Add and select from the list of available languages
  5. To see how a language looks on your keyboard, select Preview
  6. To change the order of installed languages, click on Move Up or Move Down
  7. To remove a keyboard input language, click on the language you want to remove and click Remove

Changing the Language Bar

If you want to switch between languages during operation, you need to use the language bar. You can change how and where the language bar appears so that you can easily access it during your time of need.

To change how it looks and where it appears, do the following:

  • Note that the language bar is activated by default when you have more than one language installed (see above)
  • To customize, click the Language bar tab of Text Services and Input Languages
  • In the first window, you can augment the position of the Language bar with three available options
  • Fix your other settings by following the prompts
  • To switch between keyboard languages, use the Language bar and select the language you want to use with your mouse

You can also use the keyboard shortcut Left Alt + SHIFT.
